OUR ORIGIN STORY
In 2023, we met in Iraq while teaching for a training program on the topic of regenerative agriculture. While working together over the following months, we realized that our approaches aligned with the same ethics. Over a pot of life-changing Karak Chai, we discussed continued collaboration on a healthy foundation.
In January 2024, we founded Maramia Ecological Design. At Maramia, we focus on the ever-growing methods of regenerative agriculture, permaculture, climate change, and locally-led solutions that guided our first encounter.
Our Name
Maramia is the Arabic word for sage (salvia), an herb common throughout the Middle East that has been used as a medicinal plant by women over centuries. It is believed that it is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, who used sage for its calming and relaxing effect.
The name Maramia reflects us and our work in many ways: through our work in the Middle East, highlighting the often-neglected power of plants and honoring the local wisdom of women.
We aim to strengthen the use of plants and nature-based approaches in addressing shifting food security and climate change challenges. We highlight local women's power, passion, and wisdom every step of the way.
